Cross Body Bag in Kitty Loves Candy

Poppie Cotton has sent me another batch of fabrics to play with, and boy did I have fun! Before I even get into what I made, let’s take a moment to appreciate the collection; Kitty Loves Candy by Lori Woods.

We’ve seen Halloween collections before, but they tend to focus on the dark and creepy elements, full of spiders and strong blacks and oranges. Kitty Loves Candy provides a new perspective, one that reminds me of my daughter, back when she was still little. I remember dressing her up as a fairy, picking out the perfect bag for trick-or-treating, and taking her out with her brothers while it was still light out. Just look at the soft colors of the collection; pinks and blues that interact playfully with the orange. My personal favorite is the dark print; a sky full of colorful stars!

What I decided to make, then, was a cross body bag that would match that whimsical feeling. I picked 5 fat quarters and matching threads, a bright zipper with a mismatched pull, and everything else I needed to put this project together.

Making the pocket was my favorite part of the process, not only did it let me really show off this cute little witch and her cats, but I sewed it together with a variagated pink thread that gave it that extra little feeling of magic.

Once I started, though, I couldn’t stop! So as I went up the strap, I decided to be cheeky and add some embroidered cats of my own. Aren’t they the cutest little detail?

As always, I gave everything a good press so it would be smooth as my little girl’s dresses or tightly braided hair. Well, before she went off to college to live in permanent leggings and hoodies, hair up in a messy bun, and somehow still just as cute. Three or twenty three, she still wants one of these.

In fact, her favorite part was the interior: the bag is full of pumpkins! Don’t you love incorporating details into your project that are like little secrets; just for the people who get to keep that finished result?

Well, no cross body bag like this can go empty! So I gathered up all the little girl “essentials”: lip balm and tic-tacs, hair ties and pens, all to be packed as serious as I would pack my wallet or car keys, in preparation for the big outing down the street.

Now for all the playful elements in the front, it balanced out with the smooth back, like a field of flowers that just spills over the top and to the other side of the bag.

This bag works for a special girl in your life, or like these Lego flowers, for anyone who enjoys something colorful and pretty!
